By Rob Baugh
Apparently, when you get a brain injury, your brain comes with a whole new set of terms and conditions.
And let me tell you, the fine print is longer than a receipt at CVS!
The worst part? Apparently, I clicked “I Agree” while I was unconscious.
Welcome to your newly rewired brain!
A brain injury can change so many things about everyday life. Memory, energy, communication, emotions, and even the ability to complete simple tasks can suddenly feel different.
Sometimes, the changes are frustrating. Sometimes, they are exhausting. And sometimes, all you can do is laugh at the ridiculous situations your brain puts you in.
In this humorous video, Rob Baugh shares what the imaginary terms and conditions of a brain injury might look like, using everyday experiences to describe some of the unexpected challenges that can come with life after brain injury.
But beneath the humor is an important reminder: A brain injury may change how we experience life, but it does not take away our ability to love, find meaning, or continue writing our stories.
📋 Welcome to Your Newly Rewired Brain
Imagine waking up after a brain injury and discovering that your brain has introduced an entirely new operating system, complete with features you never requested.
According to Rob’s imaginary terms and conditions, the following changes automatically come with the package.
🧠 Memory Is Now an Optional Feature
Have you ever walked into a room and completely forgotten why you went there?
Rob jokes that entering a room may automatically erase the reason you entered it. Returning to the original room might restore your memory, but apparently, that feature is still in beta testing.
He also humorously describes memory as an optional feature, with no guarantee that lost memories will be replaced.
For people living with brain injury, memory difficulties can make everyday activities more challenging. Forgetting appointments, misplacing things, or losing track of what we were doing can become part of daily life.
Sometimes, the only thing we can do is pause, retrace our steps, and hope the memory comes back!
🤕 Headaches Are Included in Your Lifetime Membership
Rob jokingly describes headaches as part of a lifetime membership with no cancellation policy.
Unfortunately, headaches can be one of the difficult experiences some people encounter after a brain injury.
His humorous suggestion that management does not accept Tylenol as a form of negotiation captures the frustration of dealing with symptoms that do not always disappear when we want them to.
The reality is that everyone’s experience is different, and persistent or changing headaches deserve appropriate medical attention.
🗣️ Your Vocabulary May Be Randomly Rearranged
One of the funniest examples in Rob’s video involves words getting mixed up.
He jokes that common words may suddenly be replaced with nonsense. His example of accidentally asking for a “half naked chicken sandwich” shows how confusing and unexpected communication mistakes can be.
Sometimes, we know exactly what we want to say, but the words that come out are completely different.
Language and word-finding difficulties can be frustrating, especially when we are trying to communicate something important.
But Rob reminds us that sometimes, these moments can also become opportunities to laugh at the unexpected things our brains do.
🐿️ Your Emotional Settings Are Now Controlled by a Drunken Squirrel
According to Rob’s imaginary terms and conditions, emotional regulation is now managed by a drunken squirrel operating a ceiling fan.
You might cry at a dog food commercial and then feel ready to fight a toaster at lunchtime.
The humor captures how unpredictable emotions can sometimes feel after a brain injury.
People may experience changes in emotional responses, frustration, sensitivity, or mood. These experiences can be confusing, especially when they seem to happen without warning.
It is important to remember that emotional changes are not a personal failure. They are experiences that deserve understanding, patience, and support.
🔋 Your Battery Can Suddenly Drop to Zero
Rob also jokes that your energy level can go from fully charged to critically low simply by entering Target.
This is a relatable example of how everyday environments and activities can sometimes leave a person feeling completely exhausted.
For someone living with brain injury, an ordinary shopping trip may involve more effort than other people realize.
Noise, lights, movement, decision-making, and being around crowds can all contribute to feeling overwhelmed or fatigued.
Sometimes, the best response is to take a break, find a quiet place, and give yourself time to recharge.
🔄 Multitasking Is No Longer Supported
Rob’s imaginary terms and conditions also announce that multitasking has been permanently discontinued.
Trying to cook dinner while answering a question may result in a kitchen that looks like a crime scene, a fire alarm, and a visit from the insurance adjuster!
Although the example is funny, it highlights a real challenge that some people experience after brain injury.
Managing several tasks at once can become difficult. Trying to divide attention between cooking, conversations, remembering instructions, and other responsibilities may lead to mistakes or frustration.
Sometimes, doing one thing at a time is the better approach.
🤐 Your Internal Filter Has Been Discontinued
Rob jokes that anything you think may now come directly out of your mouth without passing through the Department of Common Sense.
This is another humorous example of how communication and impulse control may feel different after a brain injury.
Some people may find themselves saying things before having time to think them through.
These situations can sometimes lead to awkward conversations, misunderstandings, or unexpected comments.
Learning to recognize these changes and finding strategies that work for your communication needs can make everyday interactions easier.
😂 Sometimes, Laughter Helps Us Get Through
After describing all these imaginary terms and conditions, Rob makes an important observation.
We can laugh about the many things a brain injury changes.
And sometimes, laughter is just the one thing that gets us through.
Humor does not mean that the challenges are not real. It does not mean that recovery is easy or that difficult experiences should be ignored.
It simply gives us another way to look at some of the unexpected situations we encounter.
Being able to laugh at a frustrating moment can sometimes make it feel a little less overwhelming.
It can also help other people understand experiences that may be difficult to explain.
For many people living with brain injury, humor becomes one way to connect, share experiences, and remind ourselves that we are not alone.
❤️ The Most Important Part of the Fine Print
After all the jokes about memory problems, headaches, mixed-up words, emotional changes, and unexpected exhaustion, Rob ends his message with something much more powerful.
He says there is one thing he wishes had been included in those imaginary terms and conditions:
Just because his brain does not work the way it used to does not mean his heart has forgotten how to love, his life has lost its meaning, or his story has run out of pages.
This is the heart of his message.
A brain injury may change the way we think, communicate, remember, and experience everyday life. It may introduce challenges we never expected and require us to adjust to a different way of living.
But it does not erase who we are.
Our ability to love, connect with others, create meaningful experiences, and continue finding purpose is not defined solely by how our brains function.
Rob closes with a reminder worth remembering:
“My brain injury may have rewritten the rules of my life, but it doesn’t get to rewrite the ending.”
💗 Love Love Brain Thoughts
Rob Baugh’s video uses humor to highlight some of the unexpected realities of living with a brain injury.
From forgetting why we walked into a room to running out of energy during an ordinary shopping trip, these experiences can be frustrating, exhausting, and sometimes downright ridiculous.
But the message goes much deeper than the jokes.
A brain injury can change many aspects of life, but it does not take away a person’s identity, value, capacity to love, or right to have a meaningful future.
We may need to learn new ways of doing things. We may need more rest, more support, and more patience with ourselves. We may also discover that our lives look different from what we originally imagined.
And that is okay.
We can acknowledge the difficult days, laugh when we can, celebrate the moments that bring us joy, and continue finding meaning in the life we have.
Your brain injury may have changed your story, but it does not get to decide how your story ends. ❤️
