Sometimes someone says something that gets under our skin.
We become defensive.
We become angry.
We start explaining ourselves.
We replay their words in our heads.
And before we know it, someone else’s opinion has taken over our entire day.
A video shared by Love Love Brain offers a simple reminder:
You don’t have to repeat what you’re hearing.
🧠 You Don’t Have to Absorb Someone Else’s Words
When someone is talking negatively or saying something that upsets you, it can be tempting to take every word personally.
You may feel like you have to respond.
You may feel like you need to correct them.
You may feel like you need to prove your side.
But you don’t always have to.
Sometimes you can simply think:
“I heard you.”
And leave it there.
Hearing someone’s words does not mean you have to carry them with you.
💭 You Don’t Have to Give Every Opinion Your Energy
The video reminds us that we don’t have to give everyone our opinion.
Not every conversation needs a response.
Not every disagreement needs to become an argument.
Not every statement deserves our emotional energy.
Sometimes the healthiest response is to pause and decide:
“Is this something I actually need to respond to?”
That pause can make a big difference.
❤️ Not Everyone Will Love You
One of the hardest truths in life is that not everyone is going to love you or agree with you.
And that can hurt.
We naturally want to be understood.
We want people to see our intentions.
We want to be accepted.
But we cannot control how another person sees us.
Someone else’s opinion of you is still their opinion.
It does not automatically become the truth about who you are.
🧠 You Have Your Own Brain
The video offers another important reminder:
You have your own brain.
You have your own feelings.
You have your own ideas.
You are allowed to think for yourself.
You are allowed to have your own perspective.
You are allowed to disagree.
And you are allowed to decide what information deserves your attention.
That doesn’t mean we should never listen to other people.
Listening is important.
Learning is important.
Being willing to consider another perspective is important.
But listening does not mean surrendering your ability to think for yourself.
🌿 Pause Before You React
This can be especially helpful when emotions are running high.
When someone says something upsetting, try creating a little space before responding.
Ask yourself:
“What am I feeling right now?”
“Do I need to respond?”
“Will responding actually help?”
“Is this my problem to solve?”
Sometimes the answer will be yes.
Sometimes the answer will be no.
Both are okay.
🛑 You Can Choose What You Carry
We cannot control what other people say.
We cannot control what they think about us.
We cannot make everyone understand us.
But we can become more intentional about what we allow to occupy our minds.
Someone can say something unkind.
We can hear it.
We can acknowledge it.
And we can choose not to carry it around all day.
Their words belong to them.
Your thoughts belong to you.
🌱 Especially After Brain Injury
After a brain injury, emotional regulation and processing can sometimes feel more difficult.
A stressful conversation may feel overwhelming.
It may take longer to process what someone said.
You may need more time before you know how you feel about something.
That is okay.
You don’t have to respond immediately.
You can say:
“I need some time to think about that.”
You can take a break.
You can step away from the conversation.
You can come back when you feel ready.
Giving yourself time is not weakness.
Sometimes it is a very healthy way of protecting your energy.
💗 Love Love Brain Note
You don’t have to convince everyone to understand you.
You don’t have to respond to every opinion.
You don’t have to carry every negative thing someone says.
Listen when listening is helpful.
Learn when learning is needed.
Speak when your voice matters.
And when a conversation is only taking your peace, remember:
You are allowed to step away.
You have your own thoughts.
You have your own feelings.
You have your own voice.
And you get to decide what you carry forward. ❤️
