Our homes often tell the story of our lives.
Family photos, treasured memories, and meaningful artwork remind us of the people, places, and moments we hold close. But after a brain injury, even familiar surroundings can feel very different.
Dr. Eric Sternlicht shares the personal reason he chose to remove every picture from his walls after his brain injury. While this decision may seem surprising, it reflects an important reality: brain injuries can affect how we process memories, emotions, and our environment.
🧠 When Familiar Things Feel Different
A traumatic brain injury (TBI) can change the way the brain interprets everyday experiences. For some survivors, familiar images, environments, or routines may trigger emotional reactions, mental fatigue, or sensory overload.
Everyone’s experience is unique, but some challenges may include:
💭 Changes in memory or recognition
❤️ Emotional responses to familiar places or objects
🌪️ Feeling overwhelmed by visual stimulation
🧩 Difficulty processing information
😔 Increased anxiety or emotional sensitivity
These experiences may not be visible to others, but they are a real part of recovery for many survivors.
🌱 Adapting to Heal
One of the most important lessons from Dr. Eric’s story is that recovery sometimes means making changes that help you heal – even if those changes seem unusual to others.
Creating an environment that feels calm, safe, and manageable can be an important part of recovery. What brings comfort to one person may feel overwhelming to another, and that’s okay.
Healing isn’t about meeting other people’s expectations. It’s about discovering what helps you move forward.
💛 Every Survivor’s Journey Is Personal
Brain injury recovery is not one-size-fits-all.
Each survivor learns to navigate challenges in their own way, making adjustments that support their physical, emotional, and cognitive well-being. The most meaningful thing we can offer is understanding instead of judgment.
By listening to stories like Dr. Eric’s, we become better equipped to support the brain injury community with empathy and compassion.
