“Whether you think you can or you think you can’t… you’re probably right.” 💜
One of the most life-changing books I’ve ever read is Mindset by Carol S. Dweck.
The main idea is simple but powerful:
🧱 Fixed Mindset
“I am who I am.”
“My brain is broken.”
“I’ll never get better.”
🌱 Growth Mindset
“My brain can learn.”
“I can improve.”
“Recovery takes time, practice, and patience.”
For those of us living with a traumatic brain injury (TBI), this mindset can make a huge difference.
💔 A TBI Changes Your Life… But It Doesn’t End It
After a brain injury, it’s easy to feel defeated.
❤️ “I used to remember everything.”
❤️ “I can’t work like I used to.”
❤️ “I’m not the same person.”
Those feelings are real.
But staying there keeps us stuck.
A growth mindset doesn’t pretend everything is okay. It simply asks:
“What’s one small thing I can improve today?”
🧠 Your Brain Can Still Change
One of the most hopeful discoveries in neuroscience is neuroplasticity.
Your brain continues to adapt throughout life.
That doesn’t mean every symptom disappears.
It does mean many skills can improve with:
✨ Practice
✨ Repetition
✨ Good sleep
✨ Exercise
✨ Therapy
✨ Healthy habits
✨ Patience
Every small step matters.
🌱 What a Growth Mindset Looks Like After TBI
Instead of…
❌ “I forgot again.”
Try…
✅ “I’m learning new memory strategies.”
Instead of…
❌ “I can’t do this.”
Try…
✅ “I can’t do this yet.”
Instead of…
❌ “Recovery has stopped.”
Try…
✅ “Maybe I need a different approach.”
💪 Progress Isn’t Linear
Recovery isn’t a straight line.
Some days you’ll feel amazing.
Other days you’ll lose words, forget appointments, feel exhausted, or become overwhelmed.
That doesn’t mean you’re going backwards.
It means you’re human.
Keep showing up.
❤️ Celebrate Tiny Wins
People without TBI often celebrate big achievements.
We sometimes have to celebrate things others never notice.
🎉 Remembering someone’s name.
🎉 Cooking a meal safely.
🎉 Going for a walk.
🎉 Reading one chapter.
🎉 Making a phone call.
🎉 Getting through the day without a meltdown.
🎉 Asking for help.
Those are victories.
🤝 Don’t Compare Your Recovery
Every brain injury is different.
Your timeline is not someone else’s timeline.
Compare yourself only to the person you were yesterday.
Small improvements add up.
❤️ Love Love Brain Challenge
Today, replace just one fixed mindset thought with a growth mindset thought.
Instead of:
🧱 “I can’t.”
Try:
🌱 “I’m still learning.”
Instead of:
🧱 “I’m broken.”
Try:
🌱 “My brain is healing.”
Instead of:
🧱 “Recovery is impossible.”
Try:
🌱 “Recovery is happening one step at a time.”
💕 Final Thought
A growth mindset doesn’t guarantee a full recovery.
But it gives your brain the best chance to become stronger, wiser, and more resilient.
Believe in progress.
Celebrate effort.
Keep learning.
Your brain is still capable of amazing things. 🧠❤️
