Some days I feel almost like myself.
Then one difficult conversation, one stressful situation, or one unexpected event can change everything.
Living with a traumatic brain injury isn’t just about memory problems or headaches. For many of us, it also means living with chronic pain, anxiety, fatigue, and a nervous system that feels like it’s constantly trying to protect us.
🧠 Stress Doesn’t Stay in My Mind. It Lives in My Body.
After a particularly stressful phone call recently, my heart started racing.
For a moment I thought I was having a heart attack.
Then I stopped.
I asked myself:
“Is this really a heart attack… or is this anxiety?”
That pause changed everything.
Instead of spiraling, I used the tools I have learned. Within a few minutes my nervous system began settling down.
That may sound like a small victory.
For someone with a brain injury, it felt enormous.
💔 Chronic Pain Is More Than Pain
People often ask what hurts.
The answer is… almost everything.
Neck pain.
Back pain.
Head pressure.
Tingling.
Muscle tightness.
Exhaustion.
The harder my brain has to work, the more my body hurts.
Stress doesn’t stay emotional.
It becomes physical.
🌊 The Invisible Energy Tax
Every task costs energy.
Making phone calls.
Reading paperwork.
Looking at spreadsheets.
Making decisions.
Remembering appointments.
Organizing paperwork.
Even activities that used to take minutes can now take hours.
By the time they’re finished, my brain feels like it has run a marathon.
🌱 Recovery Isn’t Always About Getting Stronger
Sometimes recovery is learning to pause.
Learning to ask:
Am I safe?
Am I overwhelmed?
Do I need a break?
Can this wait until tomorrow?
Those simple questions have become some of the most powerful tools in my recovery.
❤️ The Biggest Win
The biggest victory wasn’t avoiding stress.
It was realizing I could move through it without losing myself.
I stayed present.
I didn’t shut down.
I reminded myself that another person’s words don’t define who I am.
That felt like healing.
🧩 Healing Is Learning New Patterns
Brain injury recovery isn’t about pretending everything is okay.
It’s about slowly teaching the brain:
“I’m safe.”
“I can handle this.”
“I don’t have to panic.”
Those new pathways are built one experience at a time.
🌸 If You’re Living With Chronic Pain…
Please know this.
You are not weak.
You are not lazy.
Your nervous system is working incredibly hard every single day.
Celebrate the victories that other people never notice.
Making the phone call.
Getting out of bed.
Going for a walk.
Taking your medication.
Asking for help.
Taking a break before you crash.
Those are victories.
And they matter.
At Love Love Brain, we believe healing isn’t about becoming the person you were before your injury.
It’s about becoming the strongest, wisest, and most compassionate version of who you are today.
♥️ One breath.
♥️ One choice.
♥️ One tiny victory at a time.
