Sometimes I wonder what the most important part of our brain really is.
Is it memory?
Language?
Reasoning?
Or is it love?
Today I held my grandmother’s hand.
She is 96 years old.
For more than 20 years, memory has slowly slipped away from her. Over the last few years, dementia has taken almost everything. She no longer knows who most people are. Conversations have become impossible. The woman who raised our family now lives in a world that only she can see.
But every now and then…
When I gently hold her hand.
When I kiss her forehead.
When I tell her I love her…
She softly whispers,
“I love you.” ❤️
That moment is worth more than words can describe.
After my traumatic brain injury, seeing her became even harder.
A year ago, I was terrified.
I forgot conversations.
I couldn’t find words.
I became confused.
I felt like I was disappearing.
Looking at my grandmother was like looking into a mirror of the future I feared most.
I wondered,
“Is this where I’m going?”
Thankfully, my recovery has continued, and I have regained so much. But my experience has given me something I never had before…
A tiny glimpse into how frightening and lonely brain disorders can be.
It has also taught me something beautiful.
The brain may forget…
But the heart often remembers.
Science continues to explore why music, touch, familiar voices, and affection can still reach people living with dementia. We don’t always understand exactly how, but countless families have experienced these precious moments.
So if someone you love has dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, or a brain injury…
Don’t stop talking to them.
Don’t stop holding their hand.
Don’t stop hugging them.
Don’t stop saying,
“I love you.”
They may not remember your name.
But they may still feel your love.
And sometimes…
Love is the last language the brain forgets.
