Menopause & Memory

Memory changes can be unsettling.

For women recovering from a brain injury, it can be especially difficult to know whether forgetfulness, brain fog, or trouble concentrating is related to the injury, hormonal changes, or both.

In Part 13 of my journey, I reflect on the connection between menopause and memory loss, and why understanding the possible causes can help us make more informed decisions about our health.

🧠 Understanding Memory Changes

Many women notice changes in memory and concentration during perimenopause and menopause.

At the same time, memory challenges are also common after a traumatic brain injury.

Because these symptoms can overlap, it’s important not to assume there’s only one explanation.

🌸 When Symptoms Overlap

Brain fog, forgetfulness, difficulty finding words, and reduced concentration can occur for many reasons.

Hormonal changes, stress, poor sleep, medications, and brain injury recovery may all contribute to how we think and feel.

Looking at the whole picture can lead to more meaningful conversations with healthcare providers.

💙 Don’t Ignore Your Concerns

If memory changes are affecting your daily life, don’t dismiss them as “just menopause” or “just getting older.”

Your experiences matter.

Asking questions, tracking your symptoms, and seeking appropriate medical guidance can help you better understand what’s happening and what support may be available.

🌱 Every Brain Is Different

Recovery isn’t the same for everyone.

Some symptoms improve over time, while others may require ongoing support and lifestyle adjustments.

Being informed empowers you to advocate for your health and make decisions that are right for you.
