Perimenopause and postmenopause are natural stages of life, but they can bring changes that are sometimes difficult to recognize – especially for women recovering from a brain injury.
Symptoms like brain fog, fatigue, sleep disturbances, and mood changes may overlap, making it challenging to know what’s contributing to how you feel.
In Part 10 of my journey, I reflect on these experiences and why understanding the difference between perimenopause and postmenopause can help us make more informed decisions about our health.
🌸 Understanding the Difference
Perimenopause is the transition leading up to menopause, when hormone levels begin to fluctuate.
Postmenopause begins after menopause has occurred and continues for the rest of a woman’s life.
Although both stages can affect the body and brain, every woman’s experience is unique.
🧠 Hormones and Brain Health
Hormonal changes can influence memory, concentration, sleep, and emotional well-being.
For women living with a brain injury, these changes may overlap with existing symptoms, making it especially important to consider the full picture rather than assuming there’s only one cause.
💙 Knowledge Is Empowering
Understanding your body can help you ask better questions and have more meaningful conversations with your healthcare team.
The more informed we are, the better equipped we become to advocate for our health and make decisions that support our recovery.
