When we think about recovery, we often focus on therapy, medication, and exercise.
But there’s another piece that’s just as important – sleep.
After a brain injury, sleep isn’t a luxury. It’s one of the body’s most powerful tools for healing. Without enough quality sleep, even the best therapies may not be as effective as they could be.
In Part 8 of my journey, I share why sleep became one of the most important parts of my recovery.
😴 Why Sleep Matters
While we sleep, our brains work hard behind the scenes.
Sleep helps strengthen memories, supports learning, regulates emotions, and allows the brain to repair and restore itself.
For people recovering from a traumatic brain injury, quality sleep can play a vital role in making progress.
🧩 Therapy and Sleep Work Together
Therapies help the brain learn new skills and strengthen existing ones.
But without adequate sleep, the brain may struggle to retain what it learns during therapy sessions.
Sleep gives your brain the opportunity to process and reinforce those new connections, making rehabilitation more effective.
🌱 Healing Takes Time
Recovery isn’t about pushing yourself harder every day.
Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is allow your body and brain the rest they need.
Making sleep a priority isn’t giving up – it’s giving your brain the best chance to heal.
