Sometimes healing begins by looking inward.
Not because everything is our fault.
Not because we caused what happened to us.
But because understanding ourselves can help us understand how we respond to life.
The Inner Work: An Invitation to True Freedom and Lasting Happiness by Mat & Ash, also known as Mathew Micheletti and Ashley Cottrell, explores self-awareness, inner-child work, emotional patterns, personal healing, and conscious living. The book is part of the work created by the couple known as The Yoga Couple.
💭 What Happens Inside Us Matters
We all carry experiences that shape us.
Some are joyful.
Some are painful.
Some become patterns we don’t even recognize.
We may react strongly to something without understanding why.
We may avoid situations because they make us uncomfortable.
We may repeat relationship patterns we promised ourselves we would never repeat.
Inner work asks us to become curious about those patterns.
🧠 After Brain Injury, Emotions Can Feel Different
Brain injury can affect more than memory and physical abilities.
It can affect how we experience stress, frustration, fatigue, and emotional overwhelm.
That can make self-awareness especially important.
What triggers me?
What helps me calm down?
What makes me feel safe?
What situations drain me?
What do I need?
🌱 Healing Doesn’t Mean Blaming Yourself
This distinction matters.
Looking inward doesn’t mean blaming ourselves for our trauma or our brain injury.
It means recognizing what we can work with now.
We can’t change everything that happened.
But we can sometimes learn how we want to respond to what happens next.
❤️ Meeting Yourself With Compassion
Inner work can be uncomfortable.
Sometimes we discover things we would rather avoid.
But healing doesn’t require us to judge ourselves for what we find.
We can say:
“This is something I learned.”
“This is how I protected myself.”
“This pattern helped me once.”
“Maybe I don’t need it in the same way anymore.”
🌿 You Can Give Yourself Permission to Slow Down
Healing isn’t always about doing more.
Sometimes it is about noticing.
Sitting quietly.
Writing.
Reflecting.
Breathing.
Allowing emotions to exist without immediately trying to fix them.
For someone living with brain injury, slowing down can also give the nervous system and brain the space they need.
🕊️ Freedom Can Begin With Awareness
We cannot change a pattern we don’t notice.
Awareness doesn’t solve everything.
But it gives us a starting point.
Once we recognize a pattern, we can begin asking:
“Do I want to continue this?”
“Is there another way?”
💗 Love Love Brain Thoughts
Inner work doesn’t mean turning recovery into another task we have to complete perfectly.
There is no perfect healing journey.
Some days we understand ourselves.
Other days we don’t.
Some days we feel peaceful.
Other days old emotions return.
That’s okay.
Healing can be a process of becoming more compassionate toward the person we are while continuing to grow.
You don’t have to fix yourself.
You can learn to understand yourself.
