What if the ordinary moments in our day are more important than we realize?
We often rush through everyday tasks so we can get to something we consider more meaningful.
We wash the dishes so we can sit down.
We finish our chores so we can relax.
We hurry through the morning so we can get to work.
We are always thinking about what comes next.
But life is happening right now.
🧘 Be Where You Are
There is a simple idea in Zen practice:
When walking, walk. When eating, eat.
It sounds simple, but being fully present can be surprisingly difficult.
Your body might be in the kitchen while your mind is thinking about tomorrow.
You might be eating lunch while worrying about an appointment later.
You might be talking with someone while thinking about everything you still need to accomplish.
Learning to notice where your mind has gone is the first step.
Then gently bring yourself back.
🍽️ Even Washing the Dishes Can Be Meaningful
Washing dishes may seem like one of the most ordinary things we do.
But what if you stopped trying to rush through it?
Feel the warm water.
Notice the movement of your hands.
Listen to the water running.
Take a breath.
For those few minutes, there is nowhere else you need to be.
You are simply washing the dishes.
The task has not changed.
Your experience of the task has changed.
🌿 Stop Waiting for the Next Moment
How often do we tell ourselves:
“I’ll be happy when this is finished.”
“I’ll relax when I get everything done.”
“I’ll enjoy life when things become easier.”
There is always another task waiting.
Another responsibility.
Another appointment.
Another problem to solve.
If we are constantly waiting for the next moment, we may miss the one we are actually living.
The present moment does not have to be perfect to be meaningful.
🚶 Walking Can Become a Moment of Peace
You do not need to travel somewhere special to experience a moment of peace.
Walking to your car can be enough.
Walking around your home can be enough.
Walking outside can be enough.
Notice your feet touching the ground.
Notice your breathing.
Notice the world around you.
You are here.
You are moving.
You are alive.
Sometimes, the miracle is not doing something extraordinary.
Sometimes, the miracle is simply experiencing an ordinary moment with a quieter mind.
🧠 Being Present After Brain Injury
For people living with brain injury, everyday activities can require more energy and concentration.
Fatigue, brain fog, sensory sensitivity, and difficulty managing multiple things at once can make daily life feel overwhelming.
Being present can offer a simple way to reduce the pressure to think about everything at once.
Instead of thinking about the entire day, focus on the next small thing.
🧠 Brush your teeth.
🍽️ Eat your meal.
🚿 Take your shower.
🚶 Take your walk.
🛋️ Rest when you need to rest.
One moment at a time.
You do not have to solve your entire day while you are still living through the first part of it.
🌱 The Tasks May Stay the Same
There is an old Zen teaching:
“Before enlightenment, chop wood, carry water. After enlightenment, chop wood, carry water.”
The everyday tasks do not necessarily disappear.
We still have dishes to wash.
Laundry to fold.
Meals to prepare.
Appointments to attend.
The difference can be how we approach them.
Instead of constantly thinking, “I need to get this over with,” we can practice asking:
“Can I be present for this moment?”
💗 You Don’t Need a Perfect Life to Find Peace
Peace does not always come from changing everything around you.
Sometimes it begins with changing how you experience one small moment.
You can find a little stillness while drinking your morning coffee.
You can take a few quiet breaths while waiting.
You can notice the sunlight coming through the window.
You can listen carefully when someone is speaking to you.
You can allow yourself to enjoy something without immediately thinking about what comes next.
These moments may seem small.
But our lives are made of small moments.
